Canada’s Mountains

Home » Canada’s Mountains

Canada’s vast area means it has many varying types of terrain, much of which is mountainous. The principal mountainous region is the Western Cordillera mountain system, or Cordilleran, located in western Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories. A second major mountain system in Canada is located along the north-eastern seaboard from Ellesmere Island down through to the Torngat Mountains of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. A third system of significance is the Appalachians which cross much of eastern Canada.

The following list of mountains and heights provides the highest point, as well as other high points for commonly recognized ranges of mountains and hills. All named peaks of 3,300 metres or more are listed. Where mountains occur on inter-provincial boundaries, they are listed for each province that forms part of the boundary.

Heights listed in the tables below were taken from spot heights given on the most recent 1:50 000 maps, or were interpolated using the contours on these maps. These heights were then checked by the Geodetic Survey Division, Natural Resources Canada for accuracy. Heights are given in metres. All names are official and can be found in the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base maintained by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.
